Wax Potted vs Unpotted Pickups: What Does Potting Actually Change?
Wax potting impregnates parts of a pickup with wax to reduce mechanical movement that can become microphonic. It improves stability at high volume, while an unpotted pickup may be chosen for certain vintage-style constructions when the assembly itself is sufficiently stable.
Where microphonics come from
A magnetic guitar pickup should mainly convert string movement into an electrical signal. If coil windings, a metal cover or other mechanical parts vibrate, the pickup can also convert its own physical vibration into signal. At high gain and sound pressure this can create a sharp squeal that is different from controlled musical feedback through the strings.
What wax actually does
Wax penetrates available gaps and helps immobilize parts that could vibrate. Temperature, duration and method must be controlled to achieve the intended result without damaging pickup materials.
Potting is not intended to increase output. Its primary function is mechanical: stabilizing the assembly and limiting certain forms of microphonic behavior.
Why some PAF-style pickups remain unpotted
Historic humbuckers used as references for many PAF reproductions were not always treated like modern production pickups. Some makers therefore choose an unpotted construction for a more period-oriented approach. This does not mean an unpotted pickup must be microphonic; winding tension, cover fit and overall assembly quality strongly influence stability.
Which should you choose?
For high gain, loud stages or playing close to speakers, a properly potted pickup provides useful extra security. For vintage reproduction at reasonable gain levels, an unpotted design can work perfectly well.
