Humbucker-Sized P90: Can It Really Sound Like a P90?
A humbucker-sized P90 can retain much of the character of a traditional P90, but the result depends first on coil geometry and the magnetic circuit. Simply placing a humbucker-sized coil under a different cover does not automatically reproduce the behavior of a real P90.
How is a traditional P90 built?
A P90 is a wide, relatively flat single-coil pickup. Its coil, the bar magnets beneath the pole screws and the width of the sensing window work as one system. This architecture contributes to the direct attack, strong midrange and balance between openness and density associated with the design.
DC resistance only describes one part of the pickup. Coil shape, wire diameter, number of turns, inductance, distributed capacitance and magnetic charge all contribute to the final response.
Why the humbucker format changes the design
A humbucker cavity imposes different dimensions from a P90 route. To fit a P90-style single coil into that space, the maker must decide how to preserve as much useful coil width, height-to-width ratio and magnetic flux path as possible.
Two pickups with the same resistance in kΩ can have different inductance and resonant frequency. Resistance alone is therefore not enough to determine whether a humbucker-sized P90 will actually behave like a P90.
The role of the magnets
Alnico grade affects magnetic properties, but it should never be considered in isolation. Actual magnet charge, size, position and pole-piece geometry determine the magnetic field seen by the string.
